Tour Time
Today our hospital held a maternity open evening, to allow parents-to-be to visit the different wards and view the facilities on offer. I guess it's also to help us all feel a little more familiar with the surroundings in which we'll undergo one of our lives most impactful events.
*Note to self - the wards were HOT! I was thinking cosy-comfy pyjamas with long sleeves and thermal bottoms, but after experiencing that heat I think I'll go with a short-sleeve cotton option!
Our hospital seems to be very well equipped, though it's not like I have much experience to balance it against! Each room on the birthing wing is private and has a pool, an en-suite, and at least two bed options along with equipment like birthing balls and gas-and-air. Then there's a separate ward for mums who may need a little more assistance, but each room is similarly equipped (most didn't have the pool though). Finally, there were the wards for high-risk patients, which, for obvious reasons, we didn't visit, and (touch-wood) won't have to.
Our guide was a midwife, and she encouraged us to ask questions, and cracked the occasional joke to help us all relax as we wound our way through a rabbit-warren of corridors. The tour lasted about half an hour and it did help with my orientation, though I think when the big moment arrives I'll just be relying on other people to take me to where I need to be!
In the foyer there were stands with a couple of products and advice on services such as hypnobirthing and our local Best Start group.
It was a reassuring evening, I guess. I'm feeling as though the wait between our last appointment and the next one is dragging so it was good to be doing something that felt a little bit proactive.
I'm still twiddling my thumbs waiting for our next midwife episode though!
How did you cope with the wait between appointments and milestones?
