A Funny Turn
Yesterday while commuting home I had a really odd funny turn.
I work in retail, so on my feet for a long time, and for the most part, I’m used to having achy feet at the end of the day. But, while standing on a packed train home (despite having one, the ‘Baby On Board’ badges don’t work, because no one looks up from their phones, or gives a crap when they do) my feet suddenly began to throb so much I could barely stand, and it felt as though all of the blood from the rest of my body rushed into my legs.
I think a woman stood near me grabbed a seated passenger and forcibly moved them out of the way and manhandled me into a seat, and I practically stripped myself to get some air as I felt hot and dizzy; as though I couldn’t breathe properly. Another lady passed me some water, and the feeling of faintness passed, so by the time I stepped off the train the world had stopped spinning and the whole sensation had stopped. So there are some nice people around, and my faith in humanity was restored!
I did have a google of what had happened, and I think it was a combination of low blood sugar (I was on my way home for tea so I was rather hungry!), low blood pressure (as previously mentioned, pre-Spud I had exceptionally low blood pressure, but this seemed to have evened out during pregnancy), and tiredness. I found a few posts on various forums with people describing very similar episodes, but the advice there seems to always be to lie down, get a cold compress, etc. as with the headache recommendations, and this just isn’t possible in public!
I guess the way to (hopefully) stop this happening again is to spread out my food during the day, and try to sit down or take little breaks more often, but it’s difficult when working in a shop as I can’t tell customers to wait while I go and have an apple, or that I can’t get whatever it is they need from the top shelf because I need to rest my feet for a moment – although I wish I could!
Does anyone have any advice for dealing with public pregnancy dizziness?
