Taking a Break
T and I have been away for a week visiting friends in Latvia, and it was such a lovely break!
I realised when I had finished this post that I mostly talk about food, which is completely appropriate since T and I subtitled this holiday "Oh god, not more food... oh look, more food."
Something I learned about the country is that nowhere sells decaf coffee or Diet Coke (except in the capital, Riga), but you can get at least two varieties of non-alcoholic beer in literally every establishment. I mean, we didn't put it to the test in a shopping centre, but I bet if we'd have asked it would have been forthcoming!
I had a bit of a panic when I discovered that a beer can be called non-alcoholic if it has less than 0.5% alcohol, but our hosts assured us that in Latvia the licensing is super-strict and if it says none, it probably means none. I only had two or three while I was there, so I should be alright, right??
I wrote a while ago about T downloading an app that sends him a daily tip on how to deal with me. I've decided that it's aimed at rich idiots (and I'll probably write about that again later in the pregnancy!) as it keeps suggesting that he whisk me away on a mini-break, and while this wasn't a relaxing beach holiday, we decided that it definitely counts!
We were there for a wedding, and the bride and groom thoughtfully provided a couple of non-alcoholic cocktail options at the bar for me (and I think another of the guests was pregnant too, so not just me!). In fact, everyone was completely solicitous the whole time we were there, going as far as checking the meat on the barbecue to offer me the most well-cooked pieces, and asking waitresses about the food to ensure it was suitable for me.
On a cultural note, it was lovely to visit and explore a place that I don't think we would have necessarily chosen otherwise, even though the town we were staying in is actually a world heritage site!
T and I also had plenty of time to relax, hang out together, and debrief after an overwhelming couple of weeks, and we also hit the Second Trimester during the week, which is super exciting - we're a third of the way through this grand adventure!
Did you manage to get away on holiday during your pregnancy? Where did you go?
